Wildfire seasons, flooding and extreme heat are already shaping daily life for many Nations. The Green Municipal Fund’s Rapid Adaptation Projects stream is built for smaller communities that know what needs doing and want to move from plan to action quickly.
Program overview
Grants for proven, on-the-ground work that reduces climate risk, with a simplified application built around a set menu of eligible activities. You pick one focus area:
-
Wildfire: firebreaks, prescribed or cultural burns, fire-resistant vegetation and defensible space
-
Flood: rain gardens, bioswales, small stormwater ponds, permeable pavement, wetland and shoreline restoration
-
Heat: shade structures, water fountains and misting stations, cooling centres and cooling kits
-
Resilient community facilities: backup power, green roofs, fire- and flood-resistant materials, water storage, community food storage
Eligibility
-
Local governments with a population under 50,000
-
First Nations can apply if they have municipal status, have a shared service agreement with a municipality for infrastructure or climate action, or deliver the project in partnership with a municipality
-
The project must connect to a known climate risk — from a local, regional, provincial or national climate risk assessment or adaptation plan
-
Work must be new, start and finish within two years, and total under $1M in eligible costs
-
One Rapid Adaptation project per lead applicant. When a Nation leads in partnership with a municipality, that municipality can still lead its own separate project.
Amount
Up to $75,000. GMF covers 70% of eligible costs, plus stackable 10% top-ups for Indigenous-led projects (or municipal–Indigenous partnerships), communities under 10,000 or rural, and projects that benefit equity-deserving groups. Remote northern communities receive 100% coverage.
Deadline
Intake runs October 6-November 10, 2026. A second window is expected April 20-May 18, 2027.
